Corey Feldman knows he’s freaking us out @CNN

Corey Feldman knows he’s freaking us out

Story highlights

  • Feldman gave an unusual performance
  • He said he has a message to spread

(CNN)Corey Feldman is not going anywhere.

“I guess I’m kind of like a disease,” the actor told Rolling Stone. “I just won’t go away.”
The former child star is back on the radar after a bizarre performance of his song “Go 4 It” on NBC’s “Today” back in September.
To say the internet wasn’t sure what to make of it is an understatement.
But Feldman would like to remind the world that he’s not new to the music game, having recorded a song for the “Dream a Little Dream” soundtrack back in 1989.
The “Goonies” star joked about being “clinically insane” when it came to his morning show performance. He said he knows his music is not for everyone.
“Look, not everybody loves Bon Jovi. Not everybody loves Pink Floyd,” he said. “But for some people, it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. So call me a one-week wonder, but that’s the plan. I’m not trying to rule the world, just spread my personal message.”
And what is that message?
“Peace and love,” he said.
“Look, I’m the guy you kicked to the curb, that you brushed under the carpet, that you swept away, so I’m here to be an example for people who think about giving up,” Feldman said. “If you can take enough crap from strangers, and if you can have enough people telling you to your face that you suck, and you can brave all that, then you can stand on the stage powerfully and say yes.”

Corey Feldman Is ‘Deeply Sorry’ for Dropping American Flag During Today Show Performance

Corey Feldman was seeking redemption Thursday when he sang live on the Today show for the second time, nearly one month after he was met with considerable backlash for his first performance.

However, his latest showing was clouded with controversy after the former child actor dropped an American flag on the ground while belting out his single, “Take a Stand.”

After Feldman, 45, said, “We love you America” following his four-minute set, anchor Tamron Hall picked up the flag off the ground to hand back to him. Viewers quickly took to social media with many expressing their outrage and dismay over The Goonies star’s action.

Late Thursday evening, Feldman issued a statement exclusively to PEOPLE with an explanation and an apology.

“We were excited and grateful to be asked to return to the Today show, but there wasn’t much time to prepare. We scrambled to find an American flag to use as a patriotic symbol at the last minute and with no rehearsal,” he stated.

“Once I was on stage, my brain reverted to my choreography, which was to throw my hands up in the air with a peace sign. As a dancer, my instinct is to drop anything in my hands.”

Feldman concluded: “In that live moment, it came off as wrong and for that I’m deeply sorry. It was the exact opposite of my intention.”

His new song, “Take A Stand,” was actually a musical homage to his country, as he explained to Hall, “I’m not letting the bullies get to us… This song is for America.”

“We’re doing something new that hasn’t been done before,” he told TODAY’s Tamron Hall. “But it’s all about innovation and being an artist, and we can’t be afraid to share our art. … This song is for America.”

And he did not disappoint with his second performance, in which he started out with several more layers of clothing than he ended up with by song’s end.

Both performances have been in support of his new double CD, “Angelic 2 the Core,” which was released in June.

His September show made headlines across the country that wavered between outright admiration and poking fun, but in general could be summed up as “gobsmacked.”

Celebrities lined up on social media to praise him, including Pink and “Stand By Me” co-star Jerry O’Connell. But others weren’t so kind, and as Feldman explained on Thursday, words from a friend helped make him feel better after social media lit up.

The friend reminded him that many of the greats — from Kiss to Nirvana — were not necessarily appreciated right away.

“That really turned it around for me,” he said. “I’m like, you know, you’re right: a lot of people get hate in the beginning.”

TODAY

Corey unleashed!

But it was all in a day’s work for Feldman, who has passion to spare, as he explained in a heartfelt essay exclusively written for TODAY.

“As an artist, I’ve been bullied, I’ve been picked on strictly because I spread a message of love,” he wrote. “As an artist, if I fail and make mistakes, that’s when my critics have a field day.

TODAY

Feldman dedicated the performance to America. “I’m not letting the bullies get to us,” he told Tamron Hall.

“However, the most painful part is when you get it all right, and remember all the parts, yet you open your computer, and read comments that would tear a hole through any commoners’ hearts.”

“I must keep moving forward, no matter what. Baring my heart through my song. But just like the rest of you, I only strive to belong.”

Corey Feldman addresses bullying: ‘I must keep moving forward’

Corey Feldman had TODAY viewers — and most of the internet — talking after a performance of his song “Go 4 It” on Sept. 16. Feldman wrote a response to critics of his performance exclusively for TODAY — and be sure to tune in Thursday for his return to the show.

I, artist!

As an artist, I bare my heart and soul for my love of creating art. Art is, after all, a form of personal self-expression. Through my art, I express my tears, my joy, my pain, my sorrows. I spread love with my messages of hope for tomorrow.

As an artist, I’ve been bullied, I’ve been picked on strictly because I spread a message of love.

As an artist, I take chances by creating new dances, and I risk it all while trying not “2” fall.

As an artist, if I fail and make mistakes, that’s when my critics have a field day. However, the most painful part is when you get it all right, and remember all the parts, yet you open your computer, and read comments that would tear a hole through any commoners’ hearts.

As an artist, I must stand strong. I must keep moving forward, no matter what. Baring my heart through my song. But just like the rest of you, I only strive to belong.

As an artist, I’m predisposed to be overly critical of my own imperfections, and my unfashionable clothes, because my creative mind may see things quite differently than others. But that doesn’t make us any less brothers and sisters, after we are all connected. Though our egos try to lie and tell us we are all unique, as if we were the only one selected.

As an artist, I simply do all that I can to bring a bit of joy and entertainment for my fellow man.

I’m no better than you; I’m no less of a man. But I’m a flawed, fearless artist, presenting a band. My hope is you will see me, hear and feel me, and one day understand, that underneath the art, I’m simply a man.

Corey Feldman Surprises Fans at Lucky Strike With Pink Floyd Performance After Making Headlines on ‘Today’ — Watch

He’s baaack! Corey Feldman surprised attendees at Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood on Wednesday, September 28, by hopping on stage and performing Pink Floyd’s classic tune “Money”

According to an eyewitness, the former child star was in his “natural element.”

“He was having a lot of fun!” the attendee recalled of Feldman’s surprise performance.

The Goonies star, 45, can be seen in a video grabbing the mic and telling the crowd, “You all know this one, come on!” before snapping to the beat and belting out the lyrics to “Money.”

“He was having a blast … he seemed very lively and spent the night dancing around the stage,” the eyewitness tells Us of the fun night.

Feldman made headlines after he gave what many considered a bizarre performance of his new single “Go 4 It” on the Today show on September 16.During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Feldman revealed that he cried his eyes out after he read reviews of his performance later that day.

“They just dive in with the worst, the nastiest, the filthiest comments I’ve ever read,” he told Us. “Like, ‘The wrong Corey died’ or ‘Why don’t you just go OD?’” (Feldman’s best friend, Corey Haim, died of pneumonia at the age of 38 in 2010 after years of drug abuse. Feldman has been clean and sober since age 19.)

“I don’t care if you’re hiding behind a computer or a keyboard — it’s not an excuse. It’s not acceptable,” The Lost Boys star told Us of the negative backlash he received. “The somebody that you’re talking about is a real person with real feelings and real emotions. And I’ll tell you what, if I hadn’t been through this one thousand times, I might’ve taken my life over it. And then how would everybody feel?”

After all the criticism surfaced on social media, celebs such as Miley Cryus and Pink defended the singer. Feldman also realized that any publicity is good publicity.

“Going into anything, you’re going to have some people love it and you’re going to have some people hate it and that’s OK. … I stand behind it 100 percent. We have gotten a lot of interest,” he concluded to Us. “When they see you pulling in these kinds of numbers, like 10 million views on a video in two days, that’s really unheard of. Nobody expected this. But whether you love it or you hate it, you can’t stop watching it. And that sells tickets. At the end of the day it’s success. We have succeeded.”

“Haters gonna Hate! Lovers always gonna Love!”

Further contributing to what has surely become the least-predictable pop star cause celebre of late 2016, on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 22), Miley Cyrus became the latest to defend actor Corey Feldman. Adding her voice to a chorus that already includes P!nk and Kesha, Miley took to Instagram to support Feldman’s unconventional (and unexpectedly viral) performance on Today last week.

Corey Feldman Delivers Bizarre Performance on the ‘Today’ Show

“Haters gonna Hate! Lovers always gonna Love!” writes Cyrus. “Thank you and your angels for sharing your music with us! Please enjoy life and continue to make art!” Cyrus goes on to urge Feldman to ignore his more vocal critics: “F— judgment! You have more courage than any of those hatin motha f—as!!!!”
